As in they pack into their own left pocket for easy storage. However does that mean you just squeeze the whole jacket into that pocket or is their a way to fold it becuase I can't figure it out. Just picked one up. Anyone know? Lugsalot EDC Junkie!!!!! Joined: Aug 8, Messages: 6, Likes Received: I don't own one of these jackets, but your post got me thinking; if you didn't receive the jacket in it's "stowed" form, and no instructions on how to stow it were included with the jacket, then my best guess is that all you've got to do is unceremoniously stuff it into the pocket as best you can.
I couldn't find any info on The North Face's website, nor any pictures of how to stow the thing, so I guess the packing process doesn't involve any complicated folding or anything. Where did you buy the jacket? Perhaps one of the salespeople might know how to do it. Chuck G. Empty Pockets. Joined: Jun 13, Messages: 48 Likes Received: 0. Stuff it in there. Folding is actually bad for most material and insulation.
I have a TNF down vest and i just stuff it into the pocket. It works great. Joined: Aug 3, Messages: Likes Received: 1. I have a few of those stoawable jackets from different companies, I dont' think it really makes a difference. Folding it will make it a little neater package, rather than a giant grapefruit sized ball if you stuff it. Also has less wrinkles when you take it out.
To fold it, I usually just fold it like normal around the pocket, then kind of invert it into the pocket, if that makes any sense. Kinda like you're gonna turn it inside out into the pocket. Most of the time I don't even take the time to stow it though. What model jacket is it? Is it a full zipper and it stuffs into the side pocket, or a half zip and stuffs in the kangaroo pouch.
I could probably give you a description or short video. Loaded Pockets. Joined: May 11, Messages: Likes Received: I never had any problem folding my TNF jacket but the space savings was minimal. What it did do I noticed if i kept it stowed more than a couple of days, it would literally take a downpour to unwrinkle it. Codeman Loaded Pockets. Joined: Apr 13, Messages: 5, Likes Received: It's more of a strong suggestion than a hard-and-fast rule. I'm curious to see how this packable jacket's supposed to work.
Joined: Apr 6, Messages: 5, Likes Received: 4, Wouldn't stuffing it cause small folds as well? It should reduce damage due to creasing in the same location, but I would think it woulld still hurt waterproof coatings to some extent.
I just realized I can't find my stowable jackets, it's been a while since I've worn them. But if you were able to stuff it into the pocket, folding it in should be very similar. I usually start out by folding the jacket lengthwise either side of the stowable pocket zipper, so you end up with a long narrow rectangle. The sleeves get folded at a 45 degree angle to align it lengthwise with the jacket.
One side will probably require more folds than the other. Then I just fold it up on either side of the pocket until I get the size that I need and the stowble pocket zipper ends up on one of the folds. What you'll end up with is a rectangular package about the size and shape of the pocket. Then I just invert the pocket over and kind of squish it into a flatter shape.
It's a little tricky until you get used to it. Looking at your model jacket though, I'm guessing it was meant to be stuffed, and not folded. Another alternative is to just use the hood as a pocket. Fold the jacket inwards into thirds on either side of the hood, then either roll or fold it up from the bottom and pull the hood over the jacket and you use the drawstrings to hold it closed. It's what I normally do because it's much faster and easier than trying to fit it into the pocket and works just as well.
